Resolution

I'm not a big one for New Year's resolutions. I'd rather resolve to do things on my own inner clock. Sometimes, however, I ignore the inner clock's alarm and hit the snooze button. There are a lot of things I should resolve to do as a blogger. Check out more events, keep up with new stores, credit poses more often (the one in this photo is from Diesel Works), among a million other things.

But number one on my resolution list is to reduce and/or better organize my inventory. I wrote about my inventory about a month ago and I'm ashamed to admit that the limited success I had made has completely evaporated as I grab more new releases by the fatpack! I'm at over 39,000 now! I hit 40K and panicked, deleting a bunch more duplicate landmarks.

So this is why I'm leaning against the closet doors (a great item from Digs - fake doors!) to hold my inventory at bay.

I'm ready for Halloween. I've been blogging possible Halloween costumes for several days, but for Strawberry Singh's HallowMeme I'm happy to do another picture and show off my awesome new Lelutka hair.

1. Did you go trick or treating as a child? Yes, I wrote about those mean scary cowboys in THIS POST.
2. What was the best Halloween costume you ever saw or wore yourself? I met a young woman right after college whose fiance dumped her almost at the altar. Rather than moping, she wore her wedding dress to a big block party on Halloween and won first prize!
3. What is your most vivid memory about Halloween? It's back to those nasty scary cowboys. But second to that was one of my friends who got so excited about getting dressed up to go trick or treating that she threw up before we even left the house. My tummy aches always came afterwards when I stuffed myself with candy.
4. What is the scariest movie you have ever seen? "The Birds" by Alfred Hitchcock. My sister and I saw it on TV when we were kids and were creeped out by birds for months and months.
5. Do you ever get nightmares after watching a scary movie? Not for years. However, when I started watching "The Walking Dead" on NetFlix this past spring I had nightmares after the first two episodes.
6. Are you superstitious? If so, name at least one superstition of yours. I'm not really, but I do get influenced by other people's superstitions. My mother-in-law, for example was constantly knocking on wood to ward off jinxes when she would say something hopeful. I find myself doing that at times and explaining my action to myself by thinking "it can't hurt."
7. What will you be doing for Halloween this year, if anything, in SL and RL? In my real life I'll probably be passing out candy and trying to keep my dog from being freaked out by excited children dressed like pumpkins and bumblebees. I'm not sure about what I'll do in Second Life.

Sweater Weather at FaMeshed

It's October and several creators have great sweaters for our Autumn moods. I'm featuring two new-to-me stores today that are in the October round of FaMeshed. The great color change short sleeve sweater in the top picture is from Mutresse, a store to definitely watch for every new release. In the second picture is a beautifully textured cowl neck sweater from Coquet, so soft and comfortably casual looking that I couldn't resist!

I am so thrilled with this month's Collabor88, the event's second birthday. The new art deco build is lovely and there are three times as many stores taking part. It will take me awhile to go through what I've already bought, and I still plan to go back for some of the items I demoed. If you're a vintage glamour fan, this look is one you will want. The stole from Ryvolter (Vive 9) and the Deco pearl necklace are must haves. The Secret Store dress may be my favorite flapper dress ever and the Ingenue shoes are perfect for any period.

Ask Weird Questions, Get Weird Answers

I think we're going to be hearing a lot about how nosy Strawberry Singh is this week with her weird questions meme! But the upside is that I can be nosy reading everyone else's answers while righteously pointing at Berry as the nosy one. I CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!

1. Which was the last sim you visited? (Other than your home) I'm tempted to go someplace racy to put here for the shock value, but really it was the Summerfest sim.
2. Does your avatar look like the real you? A younger and thinner idealized me, maybe. My ass was never that fine.
3. Do you wear underwear/panties underneath your clothing when out and about on the grid? No, I hardly ever think about underwear with alphas! Even my undies are mesh these days (and meant to be seen).
4. If you won a million linden dollars, what would be the first thing you buy inworld? I'd definitely get a sim and landscape it within an inch of its pixels just to take pretty pictures in. Then I'd change it all on a whim about once a month.
5. Have you ever bought something in SL and then realized afterwards that you had already owned it from before? I used to. Now, unless it's a new release or a new-to-me store, I do an inventory search to make sure I don't already have it.
6. Have you ever done anything in Second Life that would be considered illegal in real life?  Of COURSE not. Unless you mean in roleplay, then yes. Lots. But I've done my jail time for those things! Most of them, anyway. I plead the fifth on the rest.
7. If you could go out on a date with any other avatar, who would it be?  I'm blushing. Really, any hot avatar with a smart and humorous typist would be a potential candidate. I'm only half shallow.
8. Who, in your opinion, was the greatest avatar to ever slive? I DON'T KNOW! WHY ARE THESE QUESTIONS SO HARD? Phillip Linden, maybe? He thought up the whole SL thing anyway!
9. What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done inworld? It's probably more embarrassing to think about WHO I've done rather than what.
10. If your avatar had a mind of its own, what do you think it would say to you? Oh, my avi does have a mind of her own. Mostly she just asks for money and gets quite pissy if I say no. Our conversations go something like this: 

          Dolly: I need money for hair.

          
          Me: You just got six new hairs that you haven't even taken a blog picture of yet.
          

          Dolly: None of those fit under my new hat.
          

          Me: What about the hair you already have? Something will work. You have 800 hair styles.
          

          Dolly: You're exaggerating. Just give me money. Don't you get it? I can't blog that hat in an old hair.
         

          Me: You could have thought about that when you bought the hat, so no. Not until you straighten up your hair folder.

Home Is Always A Work in Progress

I try to blog regularly, but I got distracted after going to see the beautiful Neva River, which is only open to the public for a limited time.  It inspired me to redo my little bit of Second Life, and I borrowed liberally from Neva Crystall's vision.  See her blog HERE for more information.  The Studio Skye path leading to the steps of the house, and indeed the house from Culprit, I discovered by wandering her sim.  The tree tunnel from Studio Skye is a particular favorite. 

I added a pond in front of the house.  To the rear is a bay.  On the right side of the house is a stream that begins with a waterfall.  I find water features restful and in Second Life they're also prim savers if you have terraform rights.

I can't - nor would I want to - exactly recreate Neva's beautiful sim.  I'm adding elements from it and giving credit where it is due.

The trees are from Deco and Botanical, grasses from Rustica, rocks and waterfall from Studio Skye.  The pictures are raw shots with Annan Adored windlight settings and shadows turned on. 

Balancing Act

I can't get over how many great creations are being released this month, one after another.  The gorgeous fountain from Deco is available right now at Collabor88.  The Rebel Hope dress, Earthstones earrings, and Gos Boutique espadrilles were released today in a brand new designer showcase event from Liaison Collaborative's Boutique.

Did you notice I've gone blonde?  It suited this new lovely VIP group skin from PXL Creations.

When We Dress for the Evening

A red velvet jacket gives the little black dress a kick doesn't it?  I paired my new Boom jacket with a coldLogic dress already in my wardrobe.  I love when I can mix and match mesh!  The trick in this case is to wear a small dress and a medium jacket.  Also, it's not a perfect fit for every AO movement, so if you're a perfectionist, don't put these two items together.  I decided my ladylike ensemble could use a hint of daring, so I added fishnet stockings which give even a good girl like me a whisper of edginess.

Belleza Ava

I got Belleza Shyla not too long ago, it seems.  When Ava was released this week I thought - "it won't be that different, I won't be tempted."  So I got the demo.  It was just different enough in a fresh faced way that I had to have it.  It's so me, don't you think?  Ava is all over the blogs right now, deservedly so, and I couldn't resist adding my kudos to the praise.  I'm wearing the version with the least amount of eye makeup, not being a heavy eye makeup wearer as a general rule.  If you buy the mini-fatpack as I did, you get four eye makeups, three eyebrow shades and plenty of matte and glossy lipstick tattoo layers.

Also, check out the mesh ear!  Mandala released a "clean ear" version of mesh ears to wear with my earring collection!  I have the first pierced edition, but I'm not a huge lover of multiple piercings so I'm thrilled to add to my ear collection (only in Second Life would that not sound creepy).

Truth consistently releases gorgeous hair, and this week was no exception.  I love the slightly breezy effect of Brianna.  Don't think I'm taking you for granted Mr. Hawks!

Don't Think Twice, It's Alright

I go shopping all the time, so it's not worth mentioning, except to show what's new.  But when CLAY goes shopping - now that's something to talk about.  We went (ok, I dragged him) to The Mens Dept., a monthly event for men.  I talked him into the grey coat from DROP and a pair of the headphones from 22769.  He had nice new mesh jeans from FATEwear, and I thought he looked pretty spiffy in his new duds.  I might have dragged him around for a scarf because our sim is cold as you can see, but I really didn't want to push my luck. 

We felt a little Bob Dylan/Joan Baez circa 1963 in this couple pose from Diesel Works, so I named the post after a Dylan song released that year.

The Price of Fame Is $195 L

I just found out I'm a SLebrity.  Wow!  At least I am in the eyes of a possible shape copybotter who has a Marketplace store of more than 90 "No Mod shape(s) made to resemble a famous SLebrity!"  I dunno.  Maybe she made the 90 shapes of Second Life residents, maybe she botted them.  I do know she (or he, who knows) didn't ask to use my name to sell a shape that looks like mine.  I created both in 2007 and have made only minor changes to my shape over the years.

I looked over the Terms of Service for Marketplace to see if I had grounds to flag her listing.  Not easily from the looks of it.  I can't prove she didn't do a damn fine guessing job of simply copying my digits.  Is my name intellectual property?  I'm not sure.  Terms of Service doesn't allow the use of real life celebrity or brand names to sell a product, but it is silent on the use of names of Second Life residents, famous or otherwise.

I had a small vain identity crisis over the whole thing.  I decided it wasn't my shape being available for purchase that bothered me so much.  If someone liked my shape and did the painstaking work of recreating it - well - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, yes?  Even when it's a little stalkerish and creepy.  It's not like my friends are going to see a "twin" and mistake her for me. What continues to bother me is the blatant use of my name.  It's not a mistake.  The shape looks like mine and there's not another Dolly Baroque in Second Life.

I don't usually rant.  It's not like I make income from my shape.  A lot worse has happened to Second Life creators.  I'm just frustrated, and not even the humorous thought of someone considering me to be famous is soothing me right now.  I'll get over it and go back to being lighthearted Dolly, making fun of Ayla's fugly new "shopping shape" that she made to prevent her own shape from being copybotted.

We've Been Good This Year (mostly)

It's the one-year anniversary of Double Exposure, the collaborative blog of Dolly Baroque and Ayla Qinan.  How better to celebrate than to wear the same outfits (on purpose for once) and pose together using oOo's fabulous friends poses.  It's a wonder we have hair in these pics, we suffered so, keeping everything rezzed and gridline free.  Lots of blogs do interviews so on our first anniversary we thought we'd interview each other.  We do have the right not to answer and to ask for a lawyer if necessary.

Dolly:  So Ayla, what surprised you most about becoming a blogger?

Ayla:  What really surprised me was how bad my photography skills were when I look back to the start of our blog. I thought I was quite good but jeezo, how wrong was I? I think every blogger improves with time though, as they discover new tricks and find their own style. I think we have both improved immensely, and I love that we have our own unique styles but blend beautifully, making the blog consistent.

Ayla:  Dolly, what do you enjoy most about blogging?

Dolly:  It varies with my mood.  Sometimes I love putting an outfit together just so, and showing it off with a pic.  Other times it's about delivering on a challenge, like the 52 Weeks of Color Challenge.  Sometimes it's all about a pose that inspires me, or a new SL photography technique that I want to try.  I'm like the furthest thing from an expert with photo editing, but I kind of like messing around and trying things in GIMP.  I enjoy writing, but for blog posts I think the photos are the story, so I focus on them and keep the writing to a minimum.  And last but far from least, I'm very gratified when anyone tells me they like one of my blog posts.

Dolly:  Do you have a favorite blogger, Ayla? Other than us, of course.

Ayla:  I read the feeds and see many fantastic bloggers but there is one blog I subscribed to because of its quirky nature and its kookie cute style. I always look forward to getting the e-mail from Not Quite Pink because I know there is going to be something blogged that I need and Magenta DeVinna makes me smile.

Ayla:  How about you, Dolly? Who's your favorite blogger?

Dolly:   I'm predictable in that I never fail to read top fashion blogs like Strawberry Singh and Gogo's Juicybomb.  I like seeing what they post, how they put looks together, and I really like how their photos have a consistent style - each in her own way.  Neva Crystall's posts in How Neva Sees It make my jaw drop.  I wish I had 1/10th of the talent she displays in every carefully constructed picture.  And again, she's consistent in her style which to me is a blogger/photographer strength - and one that I lack.  I can dream though.

Dolly: What's your favorite type of thing to blog?  And what's the blog post you're most proud of and why?

Ayla:  Hmm, I do love my more risque posts. I like to show my sultry, seductive side with maybe a little hint of naughty. The blog I am most proud of has to be Wistful.  It's not spectaular, I'm no editing wizard, but I love the softness and the peacefulness of it. Also, it's the blog post that earned me most hits ever!

Dolly:  Oh, that pic for the Wistful post was gorgeous.  I loved it.  But really, what's with the naked pics?  Are you some sort of perv? (wink, wink)

Ayla:  Yes, yes I am.  The fact that naked pics get the most hits gives me a pervy little thrill.  And we both know you're a perv, too. You're just more embarrassed about it.

Dolly:  What? Me a perv? (cough, cough) Time to change the subject.  Would you prefer a less bossy blogging partner?

Ayla:  No, I just ignore you when you get bossy, like you are being right now about this blog post!!

Ayla:  OK, this is probably the most important question of all.  What drives you crazy about me?

Sometimes I Forget How Special Second Life Can Be

We rail against Second Life's shortcomings plenty.  We lag, we crash, we get weird gridlines in our pictures - but something draws us there and keeps us coming back.  For me it's my friends and the creativity that is all around me in-world.  Every item in this photo - the grass, buildings, rocks, trees, to the pose of my avatar, the windlight setting, not to mention skin, hair, and clothes - is someone's vision.  I put them together and snap a picture to share my vision, too.  Just doing a quick count, I think there are works of at least 17 different creators represented in this photo.  I've been in Second Life long enough that I sometimes forget just how unique it truly is.

I snuck round to Dolly's for inspiration today. Her land is right next door to me and she has all sorts of props and poses dotted around the place. In the first picture I borrowed her horse from Focus Poses. Isn't she a pretty thing?

Now to the clothes. I am a bit behind with all the events and sales, so the other day I did a little catching up and I landed at FAIR where I got this snugly coat from Zenith.  The scarf is from last winter but it is still available FREE at Mr Poet  (You'll find it upstairs). It's colour change and definitely one of my favourite winter warmers. The rest of my outfit you can find credited below.

In this second picture I used a pose I got from Adorkable at last years winter gatcha event. It is quite serene and reflective and it gave me the idea to capture that against water.

Just Hooping Along

Doesn't this pose make you want to move your hips?  My dear friend AprilMae Devin has lots of animations in her store, Alterior Motion, that make me want to move my hips (but most of them are naughty).  She is kind enough to make poses, too (when I beg).  I adore the movement she manages to imply in static poses, and her hooping set of 10 poses and hoops is full of fun and energy.

Autumn Haze

I've been feeling a bit lacklustre with my blogging this past week. Sometimes it all just gets a bit bleh and no matter how many outfits I try on, no matter where I go on the grid for inspiration, it just doesn't come. I plurked my lack of motivation yesterday and Geanna Lanley suggested that I went for a wander around Chrystal Dunes which is temporarily open to the public (it closes today). It's absolutely beautiful and it really didn't take me long to find the right spot to snap a pic or two. I wish it didn't have to close because it's a wonderful source of inspiration!

Now on to the clothes bit. The jacket I have on is a group gift from Paradisis. Isn't it adorable? I layered it up with a Jane long sleeved top. For my blog pictures I walk a line between showing the item I want to highlight to its best advantage, and one that might tell a bit of a story, to varying degrees of success.  In this case I was so conflicted that I went ahead and posted both versions of the photo.  The main change is in the angle of the sun in Windlight, which of course made all the difference.  Also I cropped the second picture differently to further highlight the object of my photo.

It's the jacket, of course, that I'm highlighting.  Celoe's new release took me back to my real life twenties (not so long ago cough, cough) when I bought my first designer jacket on sale.  I didn't know then that I was investing in something I'd wear for 15 years until it wore completely out.  This is (almost) that jacket!

Night Stroll

I love the casual realism of Cracked Mirror's new release of tee shirts.  They are sold exclusively for the Dead Cool Halloween Event running the month of October.  I'm going to check it out and hope I don't run into zombies.  Was that a noise?
